For many of us, the Christmas holidays are about family, togetherness, rejoicing and celebrating. For those without a family, it can be a very difficult time filled with loneliness and sometimes sadness.
Over the last few years, Nick Fioretto has lost his mother and grandparents, leaving him to make his own way in this world. As we all know, the world can be a cruel place and Nick has had more than his fair share of curveballs. Nick is battling and winning his battle with cancer but the side effects of his recent chemo treatments have landed him in the hospital with painful sores in his mouth and throat. Unable to eat solid foods, he is still putting on brave face knowing that he will be spending Christmas alone in a hospital bed.
It was an easy decision for me to peel out time to visit Nick today. I brought along some small gifts, but I soon realized the most important gift was just being there. As I arrived, the first thing Nick asked for was a hug, and as I left the last thing he asked for was a hug. We spent the afternoon talking about life, love and hope.
We are all very busy during these times, but please consider to take a moment and reach out to someone that could use a lift during the holidays. Your time and love is the greatest gift you can give. And the rewards from giving those gifts are the greatest gift you can receive.
Merry Christmas Nick, love ya buddy!
