Nathan’s life changed dramatically in September 2021 when he contracted COVID-19 and became critically ill. He was placed on a ventilator and remained in a medically induced coma for 60 days, battling severe complications including pseudomonas and a collapsed lung. During that time, doctors contacted his wife, Merrelyn, on three separate occasions to prepare her for the possibility that he would not survive the night. When Nathan finally awoke, he could not move or feel anything below his neck.
What followed was a long and demanding journey of recovery. Through months of rehabilitation, Nathan gradually regained movement, learned to stand again, and eventually walked. Along the way, he discovered Hockey Heals, a community that provided not only an opportunity to return to the ice but also friendship, encouragement, and hope. In his early days with the program, Nathan skated while carrying an oxygen tank to supplement his breathing. Every stride was hard-earned and represented another step forward in a recovery that once seemed impossible.
Today, Nathan skates seamlessly alongside his teammates, a powerful testament to resilience, perseverance, and the strength of the human spirit. His story is not simply about surviving extraordinary health challenges. It is about refusing to let those challenges define his future. Through determination, the support of his family, and the unwavering encouragement of the Hockey Heals community, Nathan transformed a journey marked by uncertainty into one filled with hope. His experience reminds us that even in life’s darkest moments, healing is possible, and remarkable things can happen when people refuse to give up on themselves or on one another.
