Last Tuesday Shawn Leonard went into heart transplant surgery on short notice. This was a necessary step to address extreme heart issues Shawn was struggling with over the past several months, or even years to a large extent.
Upon completion of the transplant, there were a series of follow up procedures over the rest of the week to assist his body in removing excess fluid that was building up around his heart.
In all, Shawn remained in and out of consciousness (sometimes even having visitors) as he and his team of nine doctors continued to fight tirelessly for nearly a week. Even through this fight for his life, Shawn kept the demeanor we have known on the ice. Able to fight tenaciously and he would banter with his family, friends, and staff just as he would lift the spirits of any locker room that he stepped foot inside.
Sadly, after all medical avenues had been exhausted, Shawn succumbed to the complications of the transplant just before 10:00 pm Sunday (7/21/24) in his hospital room surrounded by a handful of family and friends.
Shawn’s presence will be severely missed and the banter between him and Sully after a Rink Rat game, will retire to the locker room folklore of legends. We will all have a stick out on the porch tonight, for Shawn.
Please help us support the next phase for Shawn’s family as they absorb the enormous cost of this lengthy battle while mourning the loss.
