Logan Cornick, was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder called SCN2A, which affects the sodium channels in the brain. Logan began having uncontrolled seizures, which are now controlled by giving Logan three medications, twice a day. SCN2A also causes autism, which results in Logan being non-verbal, having various developmental delays, and also has recently required Logan to have a surgery for a feeding tube, as his brain has regressed and no longer processes the signals properly, which allows Logan to properly eat. Logan is in daily therapies that include physical, speech (working on alternative communication devices), and occupational. Many of the various therapies are denied by insurance coverage, which require the Cornick family to pay out of pocket. At times, Logan’s medications are also denied by insurance for “approval” reasons. Unfortunately, Logan can’t miss his daily medication schedule, as these medications significantly reduce the risk of life altering or ending seizures. The Cornick Family spends between $5,000 and $10,000 annually on Logan’s care and medications.
