Graves Disease

Last fall I posted about losing weight as an old guy. Well a couple of posts later showed that I was down almost 15 lbs, was building muscle, and loving life.

Then January came along and I kept losing weight, and unfortunately kept losing muscle too. In addition, I was short of breath, fatigued, not sleeping well and saw my resting heart rate and blood pressure reaching unhealthy levels. Coupled with that, I am now down 27 lbs (about 12 more than intended)!

Of course I felt that playing hockey was a good idea and recently laced em’ up with my beloved Old Dawgs. After my second shift I couldn’t catch my breath as my heart rate reached a concerning 220!!! It was obvious that something wasn’t right and it turns out I have an autoimmune disease called Graves Disease, which basically means my thyroid never turns off. Luckily it’s very treatable and quite often goes into remission after 18 months of meds, which I started today. So fingers crossed.

The timing is never great, but this landed right during tax season making this it a really difficult spring for me. However, it’s still easy to look on the bright side as I’m surrounded by so much love, and honestly, this could have been way worse! Here’s to puttin’ on some lbs!
