Today was all about inclusivity as I had the pleasure to join some of my Hockey Heals friends and share the ice with members of the Denver Mustangs program. This is a special hockey group that is designed for players (young and old) with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD).
I personally made it a point to talk to each of the Mustang players today. One of those was a gentle soul named Donnie. As we chatted he shared that it was his birthday. I then noticed he was wearing #99 so I of course asked him why 99 and he proudly responded, “because I have the same birthday as Wayne Gretzky!”
After the skate I presented the birthday boy with a game puck, then followed that up by leading the entire group in singing happy birthday to the real #99!!! Donnie responded with a beaming smile and then delivered a big hug to yours truly.
Here’s to all those that unselfishly give their time and effort to create opportunities for everyone. Your time is a gift and your reward is making a difference.
