October 26th was a day dedicated to celebrating the lives and journeys of three amazing people.
I finally made it to a game to witness Porter Johnson doing what he loves most, standing between the pipes and stopping pucks! When I met Porter, eight years ago, chemo had taken his hair but not his spirit. Today I cheered and smiled as this brave leukemia survivor backstopped his team to a shutout victory!
After that it was quick trip to Lakewood to catch up with Torin Perret as he was released from the hospital. It’s been a trying week for this upbeat free spirit as a very scary seizure left Torin in a coma for 24 hours. Torin battles a brain tumor on a daily basis but rarely lets it get him down. Today I presented him with a signed jersey and was rewarded with a deep hug that reminded me how important it is to reach out to others when they need it most.
The icing on the cake came on a memorable visit to home of Hilary McNeish. Hilary has had very trying week that has tested her will and fortitude in her battle with cancer. However, once again Hilary has gotten off the mat and continues to face adversity head on. To remind Hilary that she is not alone I arranged for some of her hockey heros to send her well wishes via video. Tears filled Hilary’s eyes as she watched and listened to the heartfelt words.
Thank you Porter, Torin and Hilary, you are all showing us what positivity and hope can accomplish!!
