Night with the Pios

After a disappointing Friday night, the DU Pioneers responded with a dominating performance on Saturday night. Lots of highlights, but what took the cake for me was spending the evening with Steve Patten. Born with a degenerative eye disease hasn’t stopped Steve from being one of the biggest hockey fans I know. We met at a blind hockey clinic when Steve lived in Colorado and I was instantly wowed by his positive attitude and willingness to strap on the goalie pads without the ability to see the puck! Now residing in St Louis, Steve is back where belongs as a life long Blues fan. Steve grinned from ear to ear when I was able to arrange a visit to the Blues Alumni locker room and he was in hockey heaven as he traded memories with some of his childhood heros. After that we enjoyed the Lindenwood/DU game and even sprinkled in a visit to the referee locker room where Steve quipped, “I didn’t realize I’d meet four other blind guys tonight!” With my good friend James Mansfield the new radio voice of the Pioneers, it was only natural to arrange an on air interview which Steve of course crushed!!

Here’s to celebrating those that overcome and thrive despite what others see as insurmountable barriers! God Bless you Steve!

Special thanks for Dan and Julie for the hospitality and friendship, love you guys!
