Born to Win

Over ten years ago we came across this amazing song entitled “Born to Win” by a band appropriately monikered “Five for Fighting”. Yup, the band’s name is actually derired from the penalty for fighting in a hockey game!! After listening to the powerful lyrics it seemed the song was written specifically for DAWG Nation. It took a little work, but we were able to contact the band (John Ondrasik) and share our story. That conversation resulted in the John gifting us the rights to use the song and he even followed that up with a very generous donation! Since then, we have used this perfect ballad hundreds of times as a way to help tell our story and the stories of our incredible recipients. Most recently, “Born to Win” was used to kick off the 2025 Survivor Game which featured some of our most miraculous journeys and focused on four individuals (Van, Jonny, Paul and Siena) all that suffered traumatic brain injuries. The Survivor Game video was sent to Five for Fighting and the magic continued to sprinkle down. You see, John and his band are playing in Colorado for the first time in eight years with concert dates of August 19th (Arvada) and August 20th (Grand Junction)! And here’s the best part, the families of Van, Jonny, Paul and Siena will all be special guests of Five for Fighting with back stage passes and a highly anticipated meeting with John himself!
