Special Stop to See Sarah!

Published

Kicking off another busy weekend with an important visit to an incredible gal who I affectionately call, my “beacon of light”. Sarah Karr is truly in the battle for her life as the “C” word has gotten the upper hand lately. It’s been a very difficult week for Sarah and Melissa and I knew they could use a little boost. It’s going a packed weekend for me as I’ll be spending it in Albuquerque helping Greg Bronson and his generous crew raise some serious dough for another family in need. But honestly, it was a “no brainer” to fit in some time to see SK and MW at UC Health. There were stories, there were hugs, there were tears, and there was love. I wanted to make it a special one so I began by meeting my pal Milan for a signed item for Sarah. Once I arrived at the hospital I shared a story about how I met NHL legend Pat LaFontaine and the uncanny “no coincidences” he and I share. As I sat next to Sarah I called Pat and he proceeded to say all the right words in a heart warming conversation with Sarah. That conversation included their own “no coincidences” moment when Pat and Sarah realized they both grew up in the same place in Michigan!!! We all choked up a bit, but the tears were important as we talked about life and friendship. I said my goodbyes and as I got I my car I let the tears roll down my cheeks and struggled with what is the most satisfying and difficult part of the path my life has chosen for me. As I gathered myself and began the long trek to New Mexico I received a call from Joe Sakic, who just so happens to be Sarah’s teenage crush. Despite being on vacation, Joe was calling me to check in on Sarah and asked if it would be appropriate to call her. Of course the answer was a resounding “yes”, and I shared Sarah’s contact information with the Avs legend. I wasn’t there to see Sarah’s face when Super Joe called, but I’m sure it lit up with her trademark beaming smile. Life isn’t always fair, and certainly has no guarantees, but what we can control is a true love for each other. Our lives are filled with stress, time constraints, roadblocks, setbacks, surprises and unknowns, but in spite of all that, it is so very important to take the time to truly love one another. To me, there is no better feeling than lifting up a friend in need and in doing so you receive so much more in return. Love you Sarah and Melissa, you inspire us all.
