An Honor to Help
DAWG Nation was honored to help lead the way in helping John and Krista Batchelder. The Batchelders were invited to a night out by their nominator, Ted Pepper and John’s hockey captain, Pat Walsch. They had spent the day with Miles at the hospital and weren’t sure if they were even going to be able to make the event. They were surprised from the stage to learn that they were the recipients for the evening! A check for $11,600 was so apprecited and needed to help with the mounting medical bills and lost income.

John and Krista Batchelder received the news that their son Miles was diagnosed with Wilms’ tumor. Miles is a huge Avs fan and future little hockey player. John and his teammates, The Enablers, have played at the Promenade for 11 years. John started playing hockey at the age of 7, playing for Boulder Valley Hockey. Just this fall, John and Krista’s five year old son, Miles, was diagnosed with cancer (Wilms’ tumor). Even though John and Krista both have good jobs and health insurance, the anticipated costs are going to be overwhelming for them. John’s job as a commercial appraiser is commission only, so days off work caring for Miles or being at the hospital will mean no income.
What is Wilms’ Tumor?
Wilms‘ tumor is the most common type of kidney cancer in children. Wilms‘ tumor is a rare kidney cancer that primarily affects children. Also known as nephroblastoma, it’s the most common cancer of the kidneys in children. Wilms‘ tumor most often affects children ages 3 to 4 and becomes much less common after age 5.

While the Batchelders have insurance, we know the out of pocket portion associated with surgeries, chemotherapy, and lost income can be overwhelming. We want to partner with their network and muliply the GIVING BACK to give this family a financial and emotional lift!
