Steve “Mudflap” McGrew headlines the 6th Annual Stand Up for DAWG Nation
Wednesday, March 16, at Comedy Works South at the Landmark.
Steve has been doing comedy for 30 years and calls Parker, Colorado home.
OPENING DRAW
Jeff: Making people laugh has got to be incredibly gratifying and at the same time very difficult.
Steve: And incredibly nerve wracking. Every time, going on stage, you know they are there to have a good time, but you’re thinking, I hope this goes well. All you need is one person to not have a good time and shout something out. It’s not easy.
Jeff: When did you know you were going to do this for a living?
Steve: I give credit to Sam Kinison. We started together in Houston, doing amateur nights together and became professional comics together. I was the cartoonist for the Houston Chronicle at the time. I was going to stop doing comedy…it was too much. Sam was the one who talked me into staying. He said, “Do comedy. You’ve got it. You don’t want to be 70 years old and wondering if you could have made it.” I went to the paper and told them I needed to do this and if it didn’t work out, I’d come back. I never went back.
Jeff: Ever lace ‘em up and skate with DAWG Nation?
Steve: (Laughing) No! I grew up in Texas where you had to play football, you had to play basketball. Friday night lights. If you wanted a girlfriend you actually had to be on the team. I did all that through high school and when I got out I thought I’m more of an artist. I can’t relate to running into stuff and getting hurt. I hate having my fingers broken!
Jeff: Mudflap?
Steve: It was my DJ name. The program director at KYGO (Denver) gave it to me years ago. Said I should have a nickname because people remember them. I didn’t like it at first, because it’s really odd to sell yourself as something that you’re not. I’d always been Steve, but it works.
Jeff: So you go to a party…
Steve: …and people say, tell me a joke. I say no. I don’t really tell joke jokes. If I tell you something out of my act, it’s not funny out of context and you’re not going to think I’m funny, so we both lose. I’m honest that way.

Comedy Works South at The Landmark is at 5345 Landmark Place, Greenwood Village. They donate the venue to us and 100% of the ticket proceeds go to DAWG Nation.
